As someone with years of experience in the trade I'll show you my own formula for success. If you're serious about what you actually need to be sure to read every word of this article.
For me being a DJ is almost an inevitable consequence of my upbringing. Surrounded by reggae music in particular at an early age, I have always shown interest and aptitude for collecting and playing music in a way that other people appreciated. It was around 18 years I started exploring the idea of becoming a professional DJ.
After 20 years in the game, I can tell you have loved every minute of my time and want to pass on advice I give to anyone wanting to start.
Choice of music you play — The musical tastes are so personal and choose the styles of music you want to play at an early stage of your career is essential.
Really, it are two considerations here;
1) Is there a viable market for your type of choice? What I mean is this, it is unnecessary to choose a style of music to play as everyone else about hate or never heard. Do not worry, you will not be sold, but you must incorporate a commercial element in your plans. Otherwise, you will never get any reservation or make money.
While I my own personal musical preferences I wear collections that reflect my style, but that means I can play some commercial events to keep the money rolling in.
2) Now, I'm almost about to contradict myself, are you ready? Whatever genres you select, you must become a specialist. Learn more about labels, artists, distributors and so on. Become extremely well informed and make sure acquire a reputation as a DJ in your way. I am very well known throughout the world as a DJ styles I play. Accordingly, I flew to play at international meetings everywhere.
Developing your skills – a DJ capable with a good mix of skills goes an essential element of your project. If you can afford, you should buy some decks and mixer as a minimum because you will need lots of practice. When I started, I practiced for many hours each day and quickly became very skilled at mixing my music.
If you go to purchase equipment wait until you can afford decent stuff. Personally I use Pioneer CDJ 800 bridges and mixer Numark has 3 channels. My whole package cost me about $ 1800 dollars, but paid for itself several times.
If you need Tutorial try your local music school or even online. There are some fantastic video tutorials online that you can watch free to get you started. If you locate the main video sites like YouTube, you'll even find sets whole teaching on DJ equipment, mixing and more.
Be professional – No matter how clever you are if you lack professionalism and let people of your reputation will be damaged and you struggle. That is why I stress to you the need for absolute professionalism in everything you do.
Interestingly I have discovered that most professionals that I am the more seriously I take my clients. This is great because it actually improves the amount I can load an important activity because people are happy to pay for quality.
Some tools you absolutely must include a calendar to manage your reservations. A booking form (which you easily create using a word processor), make sure you use these for each reservation only that you take and require prepayment. Get business cards printed and is also a good idea to put some of your mixes online so people can you hear before you book. Doing It is simply a case of opening a MySpace Music account.
That's all for now (I may write more about this subject as I love him so much). Everything I wrote about this function is actually based on my personal career and is tried and tested. So I hope you take the time to apply what you've read and continue to be a successful DJ.
