2GB should be a large enough capacity. The SD1000 will allow 600 high quality (Superfine/Large) images per 2GB. The camera’s default is (Fine/Large), so if you want the best image quality your camera offers, you will need to change it.
High quality movies of 640×480 @ 30fps (which is the camera’s default setting), eat up card space rapidly. Each 1GB will allow 8 minutes of recording.

Btw, your Advanced User Guide (pages 139-140) shows you how many images or how much recording of movies you can do per 512MB card…so just multiply the figures in the chart by 4.

Me and my three roommates each had a different model of the Canon ELPH. They are awesome cameras: tough, long-lasting battery, many options, very compact, huge screen, etc. I plan on buying only ELPHs unless something happens to that product line. Note, though, because it is the size of a deck of cards, they all have around a 3x optical zoom–not huge by any standard, but good enough for most people. They have a bigger digital zoom, but it gets shaky and low quality (as would any camera using digital zoom). These cameras are also nicely priced. (And, I used to have an Olympus, so I know your pain).

Just a note: almost no camera is going to take a great picture from a distance at a night concert–just not enough lighting. To get the light it needs, the shutter has to stay open longer, but then any movement makes it blurry. The ELPH has some night options that helps. However, i recommend just getting up toward the front of the concert to take some shots!

I agree Nikons are good cameras, but I’m not sure you want to invest in one for the purposes you mentioned. I value the portability of my camera and can sacrifice not having an enormous zoom by just moving closer to my target.

The A580 is a simple point & shoot camera that does not have full manual control, which means you cannot select your preferred aperture and/or shutter speed.

However, you do have a few options…if you want a long exposure of between 1 and 15 seconds for low-light or night time shooting, you can use the ‘Long Shutter Mode’ (look it up in your User Guide). It can only be accessed while in M (Manual) shooting mode. A tripod obviously must be used at these slow shutter speeds.

Or, if you need a faster shutter speed (for subjects that won’t keep still) you can use the ‘Kids & Pets’ setting, which is found on your Mode Dial. The camera will apply a faster shutter speed. This will work best in outdoor situations with good light.

You can also try one of the ‘Special Scene’ options (pages 66-69 of your User Guide).

I’ve recently bought Lumix FH20 in Costco after reading tons of reviews. It is a great camera and I do not regret buying it. I never owned Canon, only Sony and Minolta so i cannot compare those two.

My opinion of the camera: it’s great. The auto-focus is VERY fast. It handles photo writing on SD VERY good (14MP photo within 1-1.5 sec). Do not forget 8x optical zoom and excellent image stabilization (much better than my older Sony). Image quality is superb.
