The SoftBox III is roughly twice the size of our original SoftBox, thereby producing considerably softer shadows. It fits conventional flashes (Nikon, Canon, Sunpak, Vivitar, etc.). Like the original SoftBox (LQ-107) the SoftBox III is center weighted but it will block autofocus assist and interfere with auto exposure UNLESS you are using TTL….
I just got in my new dynaphos lighting kit from amvona and it came with a radio slave. BUT…I have no idea how to use it. I am a true beginner and just playing around with photography right now with family and friends. I have a Nikon D40. Any ideas on how to connect the slave (which seems to have to connector thingies on it) to my camera…or do I even do that ?

In school, all the students start shooting studio photos using incandescent lights. Usually two 750 watt lights will do anything you need if you also buy umbrellas
Trying to adjust the lighting using the little “modeling” lights that are on studio strobes is difficult, especially if you have never learned using “hot” lights.
For under $150 you can get a Lowel 750 watt Tota-lite with umbrella and stand and start learning to light right away ..
All the studio images you see on my MM link here are shot using one light (with an umbrella or soft-box)
Studio flash is only necessary for some kinds of shots where the model is moving or jumping. All else can be done using incandescent lighting.

Can I use a minolta maxxum 2800 af flash off camera with my nikon d3000? How?
The Minolta 2800 does not have an A mode, it has 2 manual settings of full power or 1/16th power. This flash was introduced with the Maxxum 7000, and is dedicated to that system for any other method of power control. This limits the capabilities of the flash, but it is still useable.
You can use optical slaves, radio slaves, a hot shoe to hot shoe PC sync cable, Pocket Wizards… it would probably work off of an SC-17 cable as well.
