From the beginning, I have this camera (have you seen the price ???). But I work with a guy who has one, and I'm motivated for comment.
I work with a new kid on the camera a small independent film has been shot in the Sacramento area. I photograph behind the scenes. He was filming that day with a Steadicam, which is very expensive. I am looking for the consumer camcorder, as I have seen many times before. Instead, he is there with the Canon 7D. I think what happens? Why go to a camera on a Steadicam? But he was filming the movie full of it!
He was hired to shoot this film, and the question is who brings his own equipment for the shoot. He said that his was a little more cameras Professional Video, Canon 7D but not HD quality is excellent, and the device is not expensive for what it does. The more he thought, the more I wanted this camera.
The quality of the photographs are excellent. Surprisingly well, as a matter of fact. And the quality of the movie is excellent too.
Nice Now I have the equipment, both film and digital Nikon and Canon MiniDV camcorder. But my Nikon not record HD video. Not really a quality video recording excellent (I mean my cat is cute and all, but …). So I do not need this camera as Nice and camcorder. In general, I have too many cameras, period.
I would say that if I was in the market for a device for the consumer who made two things and two things very well indeed, this Canon 7D. There would be no need for a camera separate video. This saves money, potentially lots of money.
For the quality of photos and video, the price is very reasonable. My Nikon has only about photos cost me about it.
Very highly recommended. If you are considering, including this device, go to buy it! I would buy this camera. Kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. I guess that's the direction that many high-end cameras and medium term, even in. Less money in the long run, less cameras to carry around, less tapes and cards to go. It is also much smaller than a consumer camcorder, is lighter, easier practical to store and carry.

I bought my 7D in January 2010.
I used this camera for a bit, both in photo and video. I will consider both separately for explain the advantages and disadvantages of each side of the camera.

Advantage Impressive noise outside the ISO and low AF-Large (very, very fast) Frame-rate is ridiculous -18mp is wonderful. details. Custom-style pictures are very satisfactory.
Since I am a one video a photographer, I really learned to appreciate the images of this equipment. They are clear, even in terrible lighting conditions. Even the photographs taken at ISO 3200 has very little noise.
Shot in manual mode, but when I have to get photos taken at a second faster, I find myself flipping to the green box and make click the auto focus mode and shooting a few images in seconds. Photos are awesome. Since I photograph events, which has saved me a couple of times.
I bought the body only if I can use the extra money for a third cup, the Tamron 17-50 F/2.8. It's a great lens, but the range is clearly intended to "walk" like me, but when I'm at a good distance, at the end of the range of 50 mm usually not close enough and not fast enough.
I must say, for a camera semi-pro, always on the side of the camera is the culmination. There's very little to complain. If you have the lenses you need, this camera lens to create beautiful images.
Now the disadvantages: the video.

Stock trigger is when the camera takes an image of "rolling" lines scan CMOS sensor down instead of exposing the sensor at a time (called "global risk"). This is particularly evident in the action scenes, high and light intermittent. Archery 720-60 fps, is small but still evident, especially in a car running and looking great objects such as trees and poles (which seem to look). This device is used in the best action scenes with a bit of a stabilizer tripod or shoulder mount (which kind of defeats the purpose of having a camera phone).
Chroma Sampling
I understand some readers will know what it is. But the film people who are thinking of buying this camera this is for you.
The sampling rate is 4:2:0. This is not an option for the green screen. However, another side effect is color calibration is affected for this. Create ugly objects in the film. There are online tutorials on how to download custom Picture Styles to significantly increase the dynamic range of the camera (And as Picture Styles to create stunning colors in the device), but there is something that affects the image: noise.
Noise reduction
Reduction of noise in the video is not the case almost as good as the side of the camera image. Given some might not be the best day available, increase ISO, and once you select the past 1000iso, noise becomes more apparent. Canon markets unit as a monster in low light (it is), but the noise is very painful see, especially when the material is mixed with HVX-200 sequences. The difference is obvious.
Thus, since a good portion of buyers are not really for the video, most of my cons are irrelevant. This is a wonderful birthday clips from the camera and holidays. But for those who want to buy this (or 5D) for film production (Like me), limits should be considered.
It is a good camera for dramatic films with little or no action. But the action is one thing difficult to understand about this camera without looking gelatinous.
Overall, this is a great camera. In fact, it's a wonderful device. It is bounded on the video, but for $ 1700, which offers a capacity of relatively inexpensive high-definition (HD quality videos Most camcorders are $ 3000 + and have enough lenses) and a large "Equalizer" for film students and indie film productions.
