The Minolta 2800 does not have an A mode, it has 2 manual settings of full power or 1/16th power. This flash was introduced with the Maxxum 7000, and is dedicated to that system for any other method of power control. This limits the capabilities of the flash, but it is still useable.

You can use optical slaves, radio slaves, a hot shoe to hot shoe PC sync cable, Pocket Wizards… it would probably work off of an SC-17 cable as well.

How to Photograph Babies

Babies are a unique subject when taking pictures. They don’t always want to cooperate like an adult will. Often times they will cry when the flash flashes and get tired of being photographed after on a few minutes. Here are a few tips to get the best pictures of your baby.

1. Use a black or white background.

Using a solid color background really makes your baby stand out in the picture. The background doesn’t have to be professional or expensive. A white sheet laid across a bed or a black blanket on the floor provides the perfect backdrop to take photographs of your baby.

2. Feelings are good.

Taking a picture of your baby crying is not just good for blackmail when they’re 15, but also good to help you remember what your child was really like on certain occasions.

3. Get down to their level.

If your child is learning to crawl, a picture from directly above them will be boring and won’t show the story. Dropping down to the floor will really give you a view that is memorable. Even setting the camera on the ground will make for a great picture.

4. Take a lot of pictures.

My daughter is 7 months old and what I’ve learned is that for every 10 pictures I take, one of them is worth keeping. In the other 9 she’ll be making a funny face, drooling or doing something else that didn’t show the picture that I wanted to capture. That’s OK because digital cameras allow you to take as many pictures of your baby as you would like and delete the ones you don’t want to keep.

5. Use natural lighting.

Whenever possible, go outside or open some windows to let in the natural light. Natural lighting looks better and is more forgiving than the flash on your camera or your fluorescent and incandescent lighting in your home.

Using those 5 tips I’ve really made my photos much better, so good that many people have asked, “Where did you have those taken?” They were shocked when I told them I had them printed by a great place online and I took them myself!

Why Cant I Take Great Pictures With My Digital Camera?

Today most people have a professional digital camera and the latest computer software for it, where professional results can be obtained with a click of the button – then instantly looked at and critiqued, the area you want emphasized cropped down, the size you want, colors and areas manipulated for its improvement, and then printed or ordered.

Framing software can place it on the wall within hours after the initial shoot. That is all after the shoot, but what to do before the shoot will make the difference between an amateur looking photographs and a professional, high quality look. Knowing how to take photographs that goes beyond words is due to the knowledge of the photographer – and being at a particular spot at the exact time is because that photographer feels “this is it.”

They may take excellent pictures with an inexpensive digital camera, while someone else might shoot pathetic photographs with a top of the line SLR. It is all about the photographer and his camera, not just the camera.

Light is the absolute of all photography. Its critical components are when the sun is low in the east or west – most photographers take pictures within two hours of the morning sunrise or evening sunset. Elements such as fog, mist, rain, or atmospheric haze always make things interesting to set a mood in the picture, or an overcast sky with STRONG foreground subject matter. The light during these particular times will stand out, throwing shadows and light in unique ways, created by the photographer’s emotions (the ability to “feel” the picture as it is shot) as well as the technical aspects of the shoot. This makes a better picture as compared to excellent technical work with no feeling or emotions. Try to be in “sync” with the camera if at all possible.

Not all pictures can be taken inside, so a trip may need to be done for that special spot we have always wanted to shoot. A novice photographer may go out with a few other photographers at the beginning, but in order to focus on what needs to be done, and actually get a feel for things – go alone.

Nature and landscape seem to be considered solitary photography trips to most professionals but they can be dangerous. These trips can be one day, two days or more, depending on the area.

But anything more than one days need to be planned out: take enough water for about a gallon a day – one liter bottles work best; keep one day’s worth of food in the vehicle plus healthy snacks for after a shoot or in-between, in addition to eating at least one or two meals out; take a first aid kit JUST in case; cell phones even if we have no bars; always let someone know where the trip will be at on a daily basis; and keep things such as a flashlight, extra batteries for everything; matches, mulit-tool; and a decent knife.

Some generic things to always keep in mind are:
—Try to hold the camera level by aligning it with natural horizontal lines, like the horizon.
—If you aim your camera slightly downwards on the subject’s face, you will give a more complimentary effect. Take a view from one side, to get a three-quarter view of the face, which will give a better picture.
—Avoid putting the subject in the center of the frame. This is a habit most people find hard to break. Remember to move close and put the subject slightly off center.
—Think about the focus of your picture, when you frame the shot. If you are trying to capture the expression on your child’s face, you can leave out the other children, the swing, the dog, etc.
—Turn your flash off if there is sufficient light. A camera flash may make people look pale.
—Use soft ambient light that is available under a tree. The light filtering through a tree can give better results by warming up the skin and throwing a soft light on the features. You will get a similar effect if you shoot indoors near an open window.
—Always be conscious of the background. Many good photos are ruined by the clutter in the frame. Change your position to avoid a messy background.
—Change the white balance from auto to cloudy, for warmer, richer colors. The macro mode can open new possibilities for close-up photography, giving you new perspectives on everyday objects.
—A polarizing filter can improve landscapes by reducing glare and reflections. It can give richer, saturated colors.
—A small tripod can give you a much better shot, by lending stability. Tripods are not meant only for professionals, as some people think. Using a self-timer can put you in a number of pictures, where you are usually not visible.
—You can use the camera with a tripod and a timer, with a slow shutter speed, to capture the effects of moving water, in streams and waterfalls.
—Get a media card with plenty of memory, so you will not run out of space, at a crucial time. Shoot at the highest resolution allowed by your camera, to get the best results and sharper enlargements.

How to Take Great Baby Photographs

It goes without saying if you want to take perfect pictures of your baby, having a good camera will certainly give you an edge to get the perfect picture. I would even go as far as saying a DSLR would be the best camera to use. That is not to say you won’t get good pictures with a point and shoot – you can and you will – today’s compact cameras all come with a sophisticated feature set and usually have a portrait setting.

Good lighting is the key to all good photography, and the professionals know how to make the light work for them. Let me describe two extreme baby photo shoots. The first is where granddad tries to capture that unique baby moment by candle light. He has his phone camera flash set to off and the baby is jumping around all over the place. Oh and I forgot to mention granddad suffers from shaky hands. So how would you guess the photo would turn out?

In the second case a real pro photographer gets mum to bring the baby along to his studio. He has a great backdrop, there is daylight streaming through the windows and he has several remote flashes with diffusers. His camera, the latest top of the range Nikon or Canon DSLR is mounted on a tripod. Not only that but Mum is holding the baby and she is seated. So how would you guess the photo would turn out?

I’m sure the second photo will be the most technically correct picture but will the pro be able to capture that magic baby moment. No, I don’t think he will, even though he will be able to compensate for the unnatural environment and he will have some terrific shots he might not get that magic baby moment.

Magic baby moments are usually captured by creating an almost natural environment for the baby to be in. Try not to have the scene too cluttered with baby toys distracting from the main subject of you photo, your baby.

Try to take your pictures in daylight but set your camera to have the flash on – but don’t take all your pictures with flash on. If you have a DSLR consider an external flash and bounce the flash off the ceiling to get less harsh shots.

Get down on the floor beside the baby and get someone to hold the baby’s attention in the background. Get mum to make a funny face or do something to make baby smile. Try to focus on the baby’s eyes. Most of today’s cameras allow you to press the shutter button part of the way to enable the focus and light reading. If you keep your finger on the shutter button and move the camera slightly it holds the focus and light reading of the initial press.

Take your photos at different angles to the natural light. Consider taking shots of the baby having a bath or eating or holding her or his favorite toy. Get the picture?

Think along the lines of taking 100 pictures of baby, in various situations, to get 10 good ones and your half way there. Happy shooting baby!

A few years ago I started selling on Ebay, Which in turn, demanded the use of a Digital camera. I would take at least 50 photos a day, and sometimes up to 100. You would not believe how many batteries I went through until I realised how to save and preserve my precious digital cameras battery life. Take it from me, I never loose that great photo opportunity because my batteries have unexpectedly run out.

Get the right battery for your digital camera

I was lucky because my digital camera came with a lithium rechargeable battery and also took AA rechargeable batteries also. However, since I was a total amateur with digital cameras, I promptly ruined the lithium battery by not letting it run out properly before charging it again. Now I just use Ni-MH AA rechargeable batteries with at least a mAh rating of 2300. I have had rechargeable batteries that had a rating of 1600 and they were absolutely hopeless!!! You must have rechargeable batteries, wether it be a nickel cadmium, lithium ion or lithium polymer battery.

Turn off your flash on your digital camera
As I was taking pictures in broad daylight, there was no need to use my flash. Not only did it ruin the photo with a bright glow, but it consumed my battery power like a hungry animal. To find out how to turn the camera flash off I had to search the internet as I had lost my digital camera user manual.

Using the Lcd Screen was a big power user

I quickly learned that instead of browsing through the photos on the camera, I would wait until I had transferred them to the computer. The little harmless LCD screen on the back of most digital cameras is a total power hog.

Also if you do not need the LCD screen on, your batteries will last so much longer. Don’t forget that you can still look through the viewfinder to take a picture (like they used to in the good old days). Also see how to clean your LCD screen

Use your Power Saving Mode

Turn on your power saving mode for your digital camera. It almost works like a screensaver and can put your camera in sleep mode if left on by accident. It is usually a simple setting in the menu of your camera.

Avoid zooming in and out.

If you were just playing with your digital camera and started zooming in and out constantly, your batteries would be dead within 10 minutes, whereas they would usually last 2-3 hours. They may even be dead flat within 5 minutes, depending on what type of zoom you have.

Taking video clips with your digital camera

This is a big power user. The camera is made for digital stills and usually has the extra feature of being albe to take video clips. Not only does it take up room on your storage space, but it also uses your battery power

very quickly. If you do plan to take video clips with your digital camera you should be sure that you have more batteries on hand. I usually take videos with the leftover battery power I have left when I have finished taking all the photos I need.

In cold weather, keep your camera and batteries warm in your jacket until you are ready to use them. The cold drains batteries very quickly.

Carry spare batteries at all times

Why risk loosing that great photo opportunity because your batteries in your digital camera just happen to run out. Carry a spare set of digital camera batteries, it’s not rock science. For example, at one of my children’s sports day carnivals, another mother had to ask me to take photos of her child as well as mine, as her batteries in her camera just died unexpectedly. Because she was not prepared, she had to trust that I would catch that special moment for her child.

Digital Slr Or Compact Camera You Decide?

One of my hobbies is photography. Now I\’m no professional but I enjoy taking good professional quality photos. I had to weigh up whether to go for a compact digital camera or a Digital SLR. I was fortunate back in the eighties to own a 35mm SLR camera. The picture quality was fantastic. Much better than that of a compact camera. The ability to alter settings and change lenses to pull subjects closer or move them away was far superior to that of the compact 35mm camera.Fast forward to today and not a lot has changed. The Digital compact cameras quality has gained a great deal on the Digital SLR but is still behind, in my opinion.

 Both benefit in the fact you can see the result instantly after the shot has been taken but the DLSR is far superior in the ability to change that shot, on the spot and in so many ways. One thing with the compacts is the lack of depth of field. You take the picture and the whole picture will try it\’s best to be in focus. With DSLR you can have the subject in focus and blur the background which creates very simple but effective results.I use a DSLR – Canon EOS 400D. I have had this for 18 months so has now been surpassed in the Canon range. It doesn\’t have \’Live View\’ which means you have to compose the shot through the view finder. However the newer Canons have this now. It came with a 18mm-55mm standard Canon lens but also in the package was a Tamron 200mm Zoom Lens. I bought a Lowepro Slingshot A100W bag and SanDisk 4GB Compact Flash Card, separately.

Out of the box you can stick it on auto and never leave that setting if you want to. However this defeats the object of having so much power and scope over your shots by using the auto setting. Remember it\’s digital so you can experiment over and over again with different settings until you get it bang on. If you were to leave it on auto forever you might as well buy a compact camera.The clarity of the shot has to be seen to be believed. At 10.1MP you have a serious camera that gives you nigh on professional results. Many Professionals that have the top end of the Canon EOS range at £5,000 plus would tell you different. Remember they have to justify the £5000 plus price tag so they will find the tiniest detail different but to you and me the pictures look near enough the same.

 I went to Turkey in the summer and the pictures I took with my camera I could never have achieved with a compact camera. The scenery was a photographers dream and I managed to fill the 4GB card with top quality pictures. The ability to capture in RAW is also a bonus fo the semi-serious photographer. With RAW there is no compression like with JPEG and it\’s as it says the RAW picture.You have the option to change the white balance when your back on the computer. Yes you can bodge it up when it\’s a JPEG but is no where near as effective as RAW. Give it go yourself.

 The darkroom side of it is up to you. I use Adobe Photoshop. It cost approx £500 but is what the pros use. There are loads of magazines out there with tips on how to use Photoshop but I recommend getting a decent book on it. It is a huge piece of software but you can make dreamy portraits and Andy Warhole popart with a little practice and tuition. There is also Photoshop Elements for under £100 but I understand that this is a scaled down version of the Professional version and would be good for the begginer to intermediate.

 Your friends and family might scoff at you with your bigger camera and bag and some might say \’what do you want all that for when you can get a camera that fits in your pocket\’. Believe me when they see your laptop slideshow through an HDTV they will be green with envy and clambering to copy your photos or even buy them.

 All in all my Canon EOS 400D might be old at 18months old but will be staying with me for some years to come. I can live with shooting through the viewfinder. Maybe your so used to the new cameras that you need to hold the camera out in front of you. The choice is yours.
