Should I Choose a Waterproof Camera?
One of the best things about visiting or living by the sea is the opportunity to capture moments with a waterproof camera. Whether you are surfing, snorkelling or swimming, it is a nice thought that you can capture and hold some memories that would otherwise be lost. A waterproof camera can be used purely for fun or as part of a serious photography career. Either way, it is an asset to have and makes for some great photographs of the undersea world.
Many of the cameras that you can buy come in different styles, shapes and sizes. They may or may not have a zoom lens so that you can add a creative touch to your pictures. Some have a wide lens so you can capture an underwater landscape scene. Most of the cameras are now digital but there are still disposable waterproof cameras which can be used and then thrown away.
If you are serious about underwater photography, you may wish to invest in a good diving camera. Generally, an effective diving camera is one that will work at least 40 metres under the water. Some of this kind of equipment can be expensive but as long as you look after it correctly, it will last you a long time.
You may wish to also purchase a protective casing for either a waterproof camera or a diving camera. These cases are usually made of vinyl or plastic and are great at preventing the equipment being damaged by dropping or sea water.
The average cost of a quality waterproof camera is somewhere in the region of $200 but you can find some good cheaper models. Attachments and accessories can be bought and are particularly appealing to those who are serious about underwater photography.
As soon as you have purchased you camera, it is of paramount importance that you keep it maintained. This way it will keep working for longer and will not need replaced for a long time. One of the best ways to keep your camera in perfect working order is to clean it with fresh water as soon as you can after use. This eliminates the salt crystals that are present in the sea water and stops them from affecting the item.
If you have bought a camera that requires film, it is best to let the camera dry out fully before opening. Open the backing in such a way that any excess water will not drip into the film chamber. Checking for any foreign bodies such as grit and sand is a must. On most cameras you can open the O Rings and clean them thoroughly to get rid of any deposits. Finally, treat your camera to a regular check-up from a technician to ensure that it is working as it should.
Buying a waterproof camera is a quick and easy thing to do and there are many quality cameras around for a good price. Maintaining the equipment means it will give you years of service and you can focus on creating some lasting memories.
