Samsung, the second largest manufacturer of mobile phones in the world, has always been associated with innovation and integration of newer technologies in it’s products. Take the case of the latest Samsung AMOLED 12M touchphone. It’s one of the pioneering devices in it’s class and comes as a follow-up on the Pixon12 from Samsung. On first look the AMOLED 12M hardly looks like a phone; more of a stylised and compact digital camera. But it is indeed a phone that comes with a massive 12 mega pixel camera. The Samsung AMOLED 12M comes with a 3.3 inches AMOLED capacitive touchscreen of 480 x 800 pixels resolution enabling 16M colours. Built-in are proximity and accelerometer sensor for auto turn-off and UI auto-rotate. Like most touch enabled devices from Sam sung, this one too runs on the TouchWiz user interface, a very user-friendly and popular platform. Whereas the internal memory of this device is 4GB which can be further expanded up to 32GB by using external memory cards. This Class12 GPRS enabled phone can be conveniently used to access Internet in a completely wireless environment with the help of the built-in WAP 2.0/xHTML, HTML web browser. Messaging facilities are available in the form of SMS, MMS, Email, IM and Push Email.
The 12 mega pixel camera unit is undoubtedly the main feature in the AMOLED. When most phone cameras only come with digital zoom, the camera on this one features a 3X optical zoom, along with an auto-focus feature. With a maximum resolution of 4000 X 3000 pixels, the camera also includes xenon flash and LED flash. A mode dial, commonly found only in dedicated digital cameras, has also been included and it gives ease in selection of different shooting modes. Smart features like variable aperture, tracking touch auto-focus, face, smile and blink detection, Smart Auto mode, image stabilization, Beauty Shot etc have also been included. The video recording ability is mind-blowing as well. With a 30fps capture rate and a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels the video output is equal to a display on a 720p HD television set. The design and features have been optimised to give one a feel of operating an actual camera. In addition a secondary frontal camera has also been provided to allow video-calling. The Samsung AMOLED 12M, in it’s most elementary form is a phone that supports both tri-band GSM and tri-band CDMA reception. 3G service is also available as UMTS 2100 and 1xEV-DO 800 / 1700. For multimedia entertainment this device includes a MP3, WMA, AAC and WAV music player along with a DivX, XviD, H.263, H.264, MP4 and WMV video player. In addition users can also watch TV broadcasts on the phone with the help of T-DMB terrestrial digital TV receiver. At present, the gadget will only be available in Black colour. Other noteworthy features that have been added to the ensemble include Organiser, Voice memo, Bluetooth with A2DP and USB.

I want a Nikon D40 and comes with a 18-55mm lens. Is this enough to make a good wide-angle picture?
At 18 mm is a better wide angle photographers of the past. You can get some good creative shots through its wide-angle lens of 18mm (equivalent to 27mm on a 35mm camera). At one time it was standard 35mm wide angle available to the shooters to use miniature cameras (35 mm). In some time, you may want to use a wide angle zoom like the 12-24 mm or 10-24 mm new, but at least 800 million, by far, unless you can find a good use. Always you can go to a store and look through that lens of 18 mm and see how everything is on the D40. You had to hurry, however. Many stores are quickly running out of the D40.
