Good camera for a beginner photographer?

I’ve always been into photography but have never really had the money to invest in a camera worthwhile. I’ve had my tiny little pocket camera, Nikon coolpix s6 but i can finally afford to upgrade and i find myself overwhelmed with the options that there are.

Can anyone who has an interest in photography give me their advice on a good entry level or beginner camera? I’m not stuck to a particular brand and would like some ideas on what to get that will last me for a while but not be too over the top that i am paying for what I’m not using.
wow..so much for actual useful advice for a beginner, i’ll ask elsewhere

Which Digital camera is better? Canon Powershot A620 or Nikon Coolpix P1?

I dont know which camera to buy, they both look good but i think the canon is a little to big, anyone have these cameras?
I like to take my camera everywhere, i dont know if that might be hard to with the Canon Powershot A620, because it looks kind of big.

Hello Both cameras are good but In my opinion the Nikon is a better camera by far.

The Nikon has 8.0 mega pixels VS. Canon’s 7.1 mega pixels. The Nikon has a built-in WiFi connection, which allows wireless transferof your images,if your computer is compatible. The storage space on the Nikon is external sd/mmc card plus a 32mb internal memory, while the Canon, only has external memory. The Nikon has a slightly larger LCD screen.

But one of the key factors is that the Nikon comes with a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery and charger, while the Caonon runs off of (4) AA batteries, ( this can become real expensive.

best camera under 350 dollars?

Hi… I really want a new camera. Right now I have a little nikon coolpix s1 and its just not doin it for me anymore. What are some of the best cameras you have come upon less than 350 dollars that take clear, crisp pictures? And are good at taking action shots (I will be taking pictures of horses moving around, bucking etc… so it has to be pretty quick)

Less than $350 for action shots? You essentially need a used digital SLR then.

A new Nikon D40 with lens would be about $455.

The older Nikon D50 with a lens sells for $350 to $425 used.

But used Canon SLRs are a good deal. Try a used Canon 10D or Canon D60 SLR. Body only, they are about $300 and with a lens, about $350.

They will focus and take photos far faster than any point and shoot, so they are much better for action shots.

I would suggest spending the extra $100 to get a new Nikon D40 at $455 at a place like us1camera.com, because you get a warranty and all the accessories/instructions, etc. But if you can’t cough that up, a used SLR is your only real option for clear, crisp action photos.

I guess it depends what your taking pics of for best buy, here is some advantages:
Retailing at around the same price as the Nikon Coolpix P3, the P4 is not a very good deal. The Nikon Coolpix P3 has the extra WiFi feature which the P4 doesn’t. The Canon SD430 Wireless is another WiFi camera but if you don’t need WiFi, then there are many other cameras out there which retail for less.

Digital camera newbies/beginners – The Nikon P4 has some advanced features as well as a simple auto mode. But these beginners will be left with a bad impression due to slow performance and bad battery life.

Everyday shooters – The Nikon Coolpix P4 has lots of scene modes and aperture control but its slow operation and below average battery life may bother some.

Advanced amateurs/enthusiasts – While the Nikon Coolpix P4 has aperture control, it has no other settings to tweak.

Professional photographers – The Nikon Coolpix P4 is a mid-sized camera with aperture control but come on, give these photographers a break from their bulky digital SLRs. The very compact Casio Z850 might be their pick and it has close to full manual controls too.

Upgraders – The Nikon Coolpix P4 is a cool upgrade to the Nikon XX00 (ie 5600, 7900, etc) series but then again, those people could be going for the D50 digital SLR.

nikon problem?

I have a nikon coolpix 4600. The lense mechanism seems to be broken (it wont extend or retract by it self, I have to aid it, and it will not zoom mechanically, only the digital zoom works, I have to aid it with my finger to extend and retract) Does anyone know of a place that carries this part, or has a deal on it? I doubt it, I gave up on this camera a year ago, but I played around with it today and was able to get it to come out with my finger.

For the price you pay to repair it, you could probably buy another camera. Time to replace it.

Nikon P2 Coolpix Camera – Making me Crazy! Pictures are dark and many are blurred?

I have a Nikon Coolpix P2 camera. I have to stand 3 feet away from my subject in order to get a flash picture to come out right. Outside it takes great pics but indoors it sucks big time! Does anyone have any advice?

I have tried working with the settings, I have tried calling Nikon (they told me to reset to factory settings – duh!).

The “scene” settings are much to ambigious. They almost never fit the situation and besides who in the heck wants to be fumbling for a setting when all you want to do is take a picture!

I got this camera as a gift – it was a welcome and wonderful gift however, it is turning into a nightmare as I struggle beyond words to “operate” this very disappointing camera.

My suggestion at this point in time, is to find someone who has considerable experience with photography and ask them to use the camera indoors and see if they think there is anything wrong with it.

If they agree with you then send it back.

I have a Nikon D50 and it it a wonderful camera in all sorts of unusual situations. It goes far beyond my expectations.

Vivitar 8400 or Nikon Coolpix L11?

I’m a first time buyer of digital cameras. Two have caught my eye- the Vivitar 8400 and the Nikon Coolpix L11?

Which should I buy?

Hi… I can’t comment on the Nikon but I have just bought the Vivitar. Its the 3rd point and shoot digital I’ve had, purchased mostly for the higher resolution. What I really like, that is different from others I’ve had or used is the ability to set manual shutter speeds, ISO and aperatures, therefore giving you the ability to control depth of field and the like. It also has a decently close focusing macro setting, good for most snapshot type photos. I’ve got more Nikon 35mm cameras and lenses than I know what to do with but the convienience of manipulating my prints digitally is very appealing. Money is an object and I can’t afford to replace my film equipment with equivilent digital. The biggest downside is the speed it chews up batteries. At least 2x as fast as the Kodak 4 meg its replacing. I’m hoping that going to 2500m amp rechargables will give me reasonable use, otherwise I’ll be carrying alot of batteries around. The 3x optical zoom is “adequate” and pretty standard. The digital zoom (ALL digital zooms) are a waste… you can do exactly the same thing when you’re manipulating the photo in your computer. What would make this an ideal camera would be a wider angle zoom, far better battery life and the ability to make long time exposures. (like a “B” setting). All said, I didn’t see anything other camera close to the features for the price I paid and if $20 for good rechargable batteries solves the energy issue, I’ll be very happy with this camera indeed.
