Camcorder Problems! How do I import video?

I have an HP Pavillion laptop and a PV-GS19 Panasonic Camcorder. When I put the SD Card from the camera into the computer, the only thing I can import is pictures. Is there anything I can use for the camera or computer to get it to import video, too? Do I need a specific computer or a cable or…?

Your video isn’t on the SD card. It’s on the tape.

The SD card on the PV-GS19 is only for photos, unless I misread something. The video is recorded on MiniDV tape.

USB is also on your computer, but that won’t work for video either. Today, you’re going to learn about a computer interface called “FireWire,” also known as IEEE 1394.

There’s a DV port on your camera. That is a 4-pin FireWire port.

You’ll have to purchase a FireWire cable to transfer your video, but first make sure your laptop has a FireWire port. As a laptop, if it has FireWire, it’s most likely a “4-pin” port, or exactly the same one that’s on your camera. It might (unlikely) also be a “6-pin” port, or a “9-pin” port.

If you have any of the above, you’ll need to get a FireWire cable which fits both ends of the connection. One end must be 4-pin (for your camera), and the other end will fit your computer. Cables like these will work:

If you don’t have any FireWire port on your computer, you’ll need to purchase a FireWire card. I’m not sure which card slots your computer has, but many laptops have PCI card slots. In that case, you can easily install a FireWire card – just slide it in and plug in your cable.
