IP security cameras or network cameras transmit data and control signals of images through a fast Ethernet link and hence can be operated from anywhere in the world via the Internet. They are similar to closed-circuit television cameras and are used for surveillance and personal emergency purposes. While the traditional analog CCTV cameras offer a maximum picture quality of 0.4 megapixels, IP cameras provide high digital picture quality with multi megapixels.

The factors that need to be considered before installing an IP security camera in a residence are size of the home, amount of light entering from the streets, location and number of trees near the home.

Several IP cameras support other wireless detectors such as gas detectors, smoke detectors and curtain detectors. Hence, IP cameras can be used to monitor babies and senior parents with such personal emergency alarm systems. Emergency assistance can be reached out when a notification is received.

IP security cameras are deterrent against crime. Motion detectors capture burglar intrusions and alarm automatically. They also have the ability to store image and data offsite. Notifications of human intervention can be received on a 3G mobile phone or via email. False alarms can also be turned off with a mobile or internet message. Hence, IP security cameras enhance a home security system.
