If I bought the camera like thi would it come with a battery? I presume it would, why would they sell a camera + lens without battery forcing u to buy a bundle pack? It would mean there was no point selling the camera in this form??

The 450D should ALWAYS come supplied with a battery and charger.
All you need to buy is a decent high speed memory card. I highly recommend the Sandisk Extreme III SDHC in either the 4GB or 8GB version. Make sure you format it before you use it (in the camera Menu) and whenever you need to delete all files from it (so, everytime after all files have been transferred to your computer…format the card again).
