battery exhausted nikon

Why does my digital camera say “batteries exhausted” when I just put new ones in?
I had rechargeable batteries in my nikon digital camera and every time I try to put new batteries in it, it says that the battery is exhausted on the screen? Is my camera broken?? Please help!!
If you’re using a non-standard battery size, your battery is not fully charged. Try to leave it on the charger for the maximum recommended time for charging indicated in the manual (usually 4-6 hours). If the camera still won’t turn on, and this is an old camera (more than a year) try getting a new battery.
If you’re using AA’s or AAA’s, try using a fresh set of alkalines first and see if your camera works. If it does, your rechargeable batteries have to be fully charged too.
