nikon sb600 tips

nikon sb600 tips
Do you have any tips for someone photographing small groups of people?

For a golf tournament, foursomes will be photographed with my nikon D80

I would just like some tips on positioning, camera settings *it will be outdoors, but i have an SB600 flash if i need to take it with me*

Thanks!

Get a diffuser for your flash so the light is softened (they are milky looking and fit over the front of your SB600 – available in most pro camera shops).

Your flash is going to cause shadows because of it’s position on the camera so take this into consideration and if you choose to shoot a vertical shot, pivot the head so it is up when you shoot (this causes the shadow to be pushed in a downward direction and is more desirable).

The flash should be used more to provide fill light rather than to overpower the scene (in otherwords, you don’t want the background to fall off into black) so don’t use a 1/1 power level. Pay attention to your lens to subject distances, the SB600 will give you recommended distances and all you have to do is be within those distances.

I personally prefer the rear curtain sync because it allows for exposure to take priority over flash then fills in dark areas towards the end of the exposure producing a more natural light.

VERY IMPORTANT: Remember that subject to flash distance MUST be the same for everyone in the image so placing them in a slight curve (center slightly further away) will even the light across the exposure – the center of the flash being the strongest light. The diffuser should help significantly in minimizing this standard flash effect. You can also use the on flash diffuser (recessed in the top of the flash) to increase the light dispersion.
.

Your Camera/Flash combination is excellent and makes this project a simple one.
