d70 nikon owners manual

I can’t set my aperture on my Nikon D70?
I have a Nikon D70 that I’m just starting to learn to use and I would like to play around with depth of field but my owner’s manual doesn’t say much about it and I set the f/s to the largest number and then to the smallest but all my pictures turn out the same. The subjects are all perfectly focused and the background completely blurry. Please help!
Thanks.
Depth of field has many variables. The aperture size is one, but subject to camera distance and focus point distance also determine the size of the depth of field.
Try this. Go out some place and set your camera to “A”(aperture priority) and set the lens to it’s largest aperture(f/2.8 or f/3.5 or whatever your lens will allow). Focus on something and take a picture. Now set your aperture to the smallest you can(f/22 or similar). Focus on the same point as the previous picture and snap that. What you should see is that the f/22 picture should have more area in focus than the first picture. When doing the first test, keep the focal length(zoom) at the same distance for each shot.
Do the same test above, except, focus on something a lot closer an then do another test zoomed in on something very far away. You’ll notice that the same type of result as the first test is seen, but the degree will be different. The depth of field at f/3.5 will be a lot more shallow at say 28mm versus 70mm(a bit more will be in focus) versus 200mm.
You can check the DOF “zone” by looking at a website called DOFmaster.com
Go to this link and enter all the information you have.
http://dofmaster.com/dofjs.html
This will let you know how large, from the focus point you will have your sweet spot of focus.
If you go through all this and see no difference, then you might have a problem with the lens not reporting the correct aperture to the camera or vice versa. You might need to clean the connections on the lens where it connects to the camera body. Sometimes if these are dirty, there could be a malfunction of some type.
Does this happen with all lenses or just one?
And if you still have issues – you might need to send your gear into Nikon for a checkup.
