Help with Nikon D300s??!!?

I am trying to action shots i.e. my friend’s basketball games and my softball games, and each picture that I take, it is blurry. I am using a Tamron Lense 18- 270, by the way. Can anyone tell me what mode etc. to have it on to ensure that the pictures are not blurry? Thank you!
My dad bought me the camera for Christmas, I had a D-40.
He also bought the lense.

You buy a $1700 camera body and don’t take time to learn about photography? Start studying. There are many books and blogs which can help you learn.

In the meantime I can offer my thoughts. I don’t know which particular Tamron lens you are using but a current Tamron 18-270 I found is an f3.5-6.3. If youre shooting sports at the 270 setting this is kind of slow for action shots. The f3.5 at 18 isn’t too impressive either. When you buy a zoom with a wide range you sacrifice speed and quality for convenience. You don’t have to change lenses but your lens wont perform like separate 18mm and 270mm lenses. Optical quality is probably best at a mid setting so it may suffer at low and high ends. Dedicated lens glass is ground to work at its focal length. On a zoom its ground for one focal length and does its best at the extremes.

If you are able to use auto settings your camera can only select from whats available to it. If you switch to a sports or action mode shooting at 270 the camera sees it has f6.3 available as the largest aperture so it selects that.

In short you need to get closer to the action to use a wider setting for faster shutter speeds or you need a faster lens.
