Which filters to buy for Nikon D5000 18-55 VR lens kit?
Iam new to DSLR’s and have purchased a new Nikon D5000 with 18-55 VR lens. Want to know the use of the following filters and whether they are suitable for D5000. 1) UV filter 2) Circular polarizer 3) fluorescent filter and 4) ND filter. Which type should i buy for nature photography.
UV filter helps to cut haze in a photo, but more importantly, it sits on the lens (permanently) and acts as a lens protector (from dust, grease, scratches). Its cheaper the replace the filter than the lens.
A circular polariser filter will darken blue skies and reduce glare/reflections on glass, water. Will also reduce light by a stop or two so can be used to slow the shutter down (but not by much).
Fluorescent filter not necessary – used to use these with film cameras as white balance not adjustable in film SLR’s – it was used to adjust a daylight film to shoot under fluorescent light. Digital SLR’s have adjustable WB so if you’re shooting under fluorescent light you can set the camera’s WB to fluorescent.
Neutral density (ND) filters are opaque glass with no colour cast – they come in different strengths and stop the light down. They allow for longer shutter speeds in daylight (for instance, if you want motion blur in water, you need a long shutter speed. Shooting with long speeds in daylight = overexposure, unless you use an appropriate ND filter). A couple of ND’s are handy (eg a 3 stop & a 6 stop) as you can stack them (wouldn’t recommend more than 2 stacked).
For any photography I’d recommend a UV filter for every lens you have. For nature photography, a circular polariser would be most useful as well, as it will cut glare from a water surface. ND not so useful unless you want long shutter speeds in daylight.

B+W 77mm Clear UV Haze with Multi-Resistant Coating (010M) $69.00 This UV Filter blocks the invisible UV component of light from the sky, which can cause blur and to which many color films react with a blue cast. These filters should be called UV-Blocking Filters, because there are filters for technical applications that pass UV radiation and block all the other wavelengths. Nevertheless, the short term “UV Filter” has become established among photographers. UV … |
