nikon autofocus system
The autofocus system in my Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM failed today. How much can I expect to pay to have it repaired?
A little research today revealed that this is an all too common problem with Canon lens. Disappointing and frustrating. I only started using Canon because at the time they were the only ones offering FF cameras.
Probably time to go back to Nikon. I have never had a lens failure with a Nikon product.
I bought the lens in 2007. The warranty has expired. I’ll give ‘em a call. Thanks for the suggestion.
If it’s under warranty, you could expect to only pay for the shipping. I have had a nikon lens fail, albeit a non-pro kit lens, my 18-135mm, an AF-S (which stopped working), about 2 months after the warranty ran out. Nikon quoted me $145 plus shipping to repair it, which was about what the lens was worth. I got a new lens instead.
I’ve also heard of canon lens issues in the pro series, specifically in the 24-70 2.8, but not the 50. Sorry to hear. The more technology you cram into something, the more chance there is for random failure – and sadly, USM/AF-S in both nikon and canon have way too many failure occurrences to be acceptable for what is asked to own one of them. Too bad canon stopped driving their lenses mechanically. My example of this is the nikon 85mm f/1.4, a fast professional prime with a screw driven AF mechanism that will work forever. That is probably my only beef with canon. I only own one lens with AF-S, the others are AF, and I rather like it that way.
