i also see from this tutorial http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40/use…
that it is option number 17 in the custom settings menu.. only problem is my menu on my d40 only go to 6??
To turn the remote on
!) press the info button
2) press the i
3) use the multiselector to highlight the shooting mode
4) press OK
5) selelct either 2 sec delay remote or quick remote from the mode list
6) press OK
If you are going to use the self timer often set your fn button just to the left of the lens to shooting mode so you can change mode easily. This is done on CS11 menu
The longest you can set the camera to be on remote without the remote being used is 15 minutes and that time is set through CS17
1)Go to the pencil Icon on the left of the menu that is the custom settings menu
2) scroll down with the multiselector button to CS 17 Remote on Duration Yes the first screen goes to 6 but keep scrolling you will get there
3) press the right mulitselctor to get to options
4) scroll down to the time you want is hightlighted
5) press OK
I hope this helps
