What’s the best lens for taking theater shots?
I just got a Nikon D50. I only have old (non AF) lenses. I’d like to buy a new lens for taking shots of my daughter’s musical theater productions. Low light, from the back of a small theater. What are my options – mid cost range?
Hi there, to start with you should get a tripod, even if its a really cheap one its your best friend when shooting in a theatre, no matter how good your lenses are sometimes there are times in theatre when the light is so low you have to have a tripod.
As far as lenses go for theatre its good to have a good zoom lens and a wideangle. The lower the F number on the lens the more light the lens will let through which obviously is what you need for theatre! I use a Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 as my zoom, It is abit expensive but a fantastic lens and not just for low light but for portraits, wildlife and all other kinds of photography. If you are looking for something cheap that will give good light, a Nikon 50mm F1.8 is a great little lens and you can usually pick one up for under £100 (probably cheaper in the US) and is very sharp. Its not a zoom and you will need to walk up to your subject to get closer but its a super lens and i use it all the time for theatre.
