sigma 400mm nikon

Are Sigma’s reliable lenses? If so, which of the following lenses do you recommend?
I need a good distance wildlife lens for when I’m in Africa this summer. I’m looking at the:
Sigma 120 – 400mm
Sigma 150 – 500mm
But someone told me that Sigmas are not good lenses at all. Should I spend the money, or go with a different lens? If I do stay with a Sigma, which of the two lenses I just listed should I buy? PS- I have a Nikon D2X if that helps.
Sigma is a well known brand that does well in reviews.
I have one (a 55-200) for my Olympus E-510 and I’m very happy with it.
Personally I’d go with a shorter zoom (like my 55-200) and add a cheapish 500mm mirror lens. The total cost is similar to your original choices yet would, I feel, be of more use. The shorter zoom on guided safaris where the animals come fairly close anyway and the mirror for when you’re shooting at a distance where you’ll appreciate the lighter weight and small size.
