What are the best settings to use on my Nikon D40 for DOF type photos?

I have a Nikon D40 and i would like to take pictures with a noticeable DOF. What is the best mode i should be shooting in? And what should i be adjusting according to the shot? I’ve been told i should be adjusting the aperture. Also, do i need a tripod or is the shutter speed quick enough for my hands?

Depth of Field – DOF – is controlled by three factors:

1) The focal length of the lens.
2) The f-stop used.
3) Subject distance.

At http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html you’ll find a good explanation of DOF and a DOF Calculator which you can use to compute DOF for any combination of focal length, f-stop and subject distance imaginable.

I always shoot in Aperture Priority since I like to have control of my DOF. You’ll want to use Manual Focus or remember to use the Auto Focus Lock, especially when your goal is maximum DOF.

Here are some examples, using your D40 and an 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 lens.

18mm @ f3.5 focused to 10′ DOF is from 6′-2” to 27′-4”. Everything from 3′-10” in front of your subject to 17′-4” behind it will be in focus.

18mm @ f16 focused to 10′ DOF is from 2′-7” to infinity. Everything from 7′-5” in front of your subject to as far as you can see – infinity – will be in focus.

55mm @ f5.6 focused to 10′ DOF is from 9′-0” to 11′-2”. Everything from 1′-0” in front of your subject to 1′-2” behind it will be in focus.

55mm @ f16 focused to 10′ DOF is from 7′-8” to 14′-4”. Everything from 2′-4” in front of your subject to 4′-4” behind it will be in focus.

You should always use a tripod whenever possible. Just remember to turn off the VR (if your lens has it) when using a tripod. For good landscapes a tripod is all but mandatory.
