Nikon D40 compatible lenses……?
Hi. I just got a Nikon D40 and I have a question. My dad was a photog in the the 80’s and has this old Nikon with a TON of lenses. I am just wondering if any of his old lenses would work with my new camera. One of his lenses reads on the side: Nikkor-Q Auto 1:4 f=200mm. Another says: Nikkor-S auto 1:2.8 f=35mm. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks much.

They are all compatible .. it is just that the manual lenses will have to be used manually.
If you want all the functions of your auto-focus and matrix metering to work, you will have to use the Nikon AF-S and AF-I lenses made over the past 15 years.
I use old lenses on my Nikon D200 all the time … My favorites are a 20mm f/3.5 and a 105 f/2.5 that are over 30 years old as well as a 55mm macro and 500mm mirror lens, each over 25 year old. You will just have to use those lenses just like your dad did back before auto-focus was around. See if he will let you use one of his 35mm bodies too. You can learn a lot shooting them.
