sigma 15mm nikon

How much barrel distortion does a 15mm lens give on a 1.5 crop Nikon D50?

I’ve been looking at this lens: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/407595-USA/Sigma_476306_15mm_f_2_8_EX_DG.html
Sigma 15mm f2.8, but I’ve never used that small a focal length before and I don’t know how much distortion it will give, it says that its a 180 degree lens, and I’ve seen some photos that are hugely distorted like this one:

the sigma 15mm 2.8 is specifically a fish eye lens. anything that will give you 180 degrees will give you distortion no matter what you do. however, if you shoot close up just like that car pix in one of your links, you might get the impression that there is little distortion, but there still is distortion if you look closely.

secondly, a “cropped” camera like the D50 can lessen the distortion effects on a lens because the camera sensor only picks up the image in center part of a lens, where distortion is less than the outer edges of a lens. however if it’s a fish eye lens, then there’s nothing you can do.

if you want a more “rectilinear” lens, somebody in this flickr group suggested getting the sigma 10-20mm lens. http://www.flickr.com/groups/sigma15mm/

forget using photoshop to adjust for distortion. it’s not worth the time or effort, especially if you have a lot of photos to adjust.
