best nikon for beginners
What is the best Nikon DSLR for a beginner?

I’m looking to upgrade from a P&S. I have looked at cameras instore and seem to prefer the way the Nikon feels over the canons.

I have no advanced knowledge in photography. I have tried doing research but when comparing alot of technical terms are thrown around and I’m very confused by it all.

I think I am basically having to go with the D40 or D60, my budget is $600. However if something better is definitely worth it, I may just want to save up the extra. But when I compare to say the D90, considering I wouldn’t even know how to fully use the D40 right away, would it even be worth it for me?

I just shoot for hobby and of my family. I’m looking for a camera with crisp quality and clearness. I don’t necessary blow up prints bigger than 5×7 or 8×10 but if I get some great shots I may, but it wouldn’t be often. I do crop down in photo shop a bit.

I know I will be using automode quite a bit till I learn more.

As an entry level dSLR its hard to beat the D40 particularly the 2 lens kit. It will give you great photos at a good price. Don’t get hung up on megapixels. Unless you make really really large output you will never miss it, At 8X10 the D40 will do fine I do A3 with mine with no problems. thats 11.7 × 16 inches. The D40 has better signal to noise ratio, dynamic range and tonal range than many more expensive cameras with higher megapixels. Don’t take my word for it here is the DXO mark comparison to the Canon 400 D and the olympus E520 . http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/eng/Image-Quality-Database/Compare-cameras/(appareil1)/229%7C0/(appareil2)/184%7C0/(appareil3)/221%7C0/(onglet)/0/(brand)/Nikon/(brand2)/Canon/(brand3)/Olympus
The D40 has a fully auto mode and as you grow you can move all the way to full manual if you choose to, In addition the lenses and accessories you buy for the D40 will work on the camera you move up to whenever that is. It will probably be a while and may even be to a camera that is not even produced now but some futire model. I have the D40 and a D300 and when I am shooting just for fun I often grab the D40 I love the way its easy to use and gives good results
